Crisis & Safety Resources

Version 1.0 · Effective 2026-05-26 · GLOBAL

Free, confidential helplines for suicide prevention, mental-health crises, domestic and sexual violence, child abuse, LGBTQ+ support, substance-use crisis, and human trafficking — organised by country. Surfaced in-Session by Readers when a Client signals crisis, and available here at any time. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number first.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking about acting on thoughts of suicide right now, please contact your local emergency number first — 911 in the United States and Canada, 999 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, 112 across the EU/EEA, 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand, 110 in Japan, 119 in South Korea, 100/101 in Israel, 112 in much of South Asia and Africa, and the country-specific numbers below. Helplines are for support; emergency services are for danger.

This page lists the crisis and safety helplines BookTarot Readers will surface during a Session if a Client describes thoughts of suicide, self-harm, harm to others, ongoing abuse, sexual assault, child endangerment, intimate-partner violence, substance-use crisis, or trafficking. It is also linked from every Reader profile, the bottom of every Session screen, the Acceptable Use Policy (/legal/acceptable-use), the Trust & Safety Policy (/legal/trust-safety), and the Terms of Service (/legal/terms § 5.3).

This list is best-effort. Helpline phone numbers, hours, and operating organisations change. We review it on a rolling six-month cycle, but the most authoritative real-time directory is Find A Helpline at findahelpline.com (130+ countries, filterable by topic, language, contact mode, and hours), which we recommend as a cross-check before you rely on any number here. If you spot an error, please email safety@booktarot.com so we can correct it the same day.

Free, confidential, non-judgemental. Every line listed below is free to call from a phone in the named country (some are also free from mobile; charges can apply on some networks), confidential within the limits of the law of that country, and staffed by trained volunteers or professionals. None of them require you to give your name. None of them will judge you for calling.

For each, please use findahelpline.com/{country-code} for current crisis lines and women's-protection lines.

Country not listed?

We add countries to this list as we expand. If your country is not above, use these in order:

  1. Your local emergency number. It is the most reliable resource if you are in immediate danger.
  2. Find A Helpline at findahelpline.com — covers 130+ countries with filtering by topic, language, and contact method.
  3. IASP Crisis Centres at iasp.info/resources/Crisis_Centres.
  4. Befrienders Worldwide at befrienders.org.
  5. Child Helpline International at childhelplineinternational.org for children and young people.

If you are in a country where these resources are not accessible (for example, due to internet restriction) and you are using BookTarot, please tell your Reader; we will end the Session and help you to safety as best we can.

What Readers will do in a Session

If during a Session you describe thoughts of suicide, intent to harm yourself or others, ongoing abuse, sexual assault, child endangerment, intimate-partner violence, substance-use crisis, or trafficking, your Reader is contractually required (under /legal/terms § 5.3 and the Acceptable Use Policy at /legal/acceptable-use) to:

  1. Pause the reading and stay calm.
  2. Listen without judgement.
  3. Share the regionally appropriate crisis resource from this page based on your country of residence as known to the Platform.
  4. Encourage you to contact the resource, or — with your permission — stay on the line while you do.
  5. End the Session if doing so is in your interest.
  6. Notify our Trust & Safety team after the Session in the limited ways permitted by the Privacy Policy (/legal/privacy § 5), so we can offer follow-up support where appropriate.

Readers will not give medical, psychiatric, legal, or substance-use advice during a Session, and will not interpret the cards in a way that could be perceived as discouraging you from seeking emergency help. See /legal/terms § 5 and /legal/acceptable-use for the full conduct standards.

Specific contexts

Sexual orientation, gender identity, and identity-based crises

The Trevor Project (US), LGBT Foundation (UK), Switchboard (UK), Galop (UK), LGBT Ireland, MindOut (UK), QLife (Australia), OUTLine (New Zealand), and Trans Lifeline (US and Canada) are listed under their country headings above. Internationally, ILGA World maintains a directory at ilga.org. If you are in a country where being out or seeking LGBTQ+ support is criminalised or unsafe, please contact a global directory rather than calling a local line, and consider using a chat-based service from a private device.

Intimate-partner violence

Refuge (UK), the National Domestic Violence Hotline (US), 1800RESPECT (Australia), the National Domestic Abuse Helpline (UK), Hilfetelefon Gewalt gegen Frauen (Germany), 1522 (Italy), 016 (Spain), Ligue 180 (Brazil), and many others are listed under their country headings. The international meta-resource is the Hot Peach Pages at hotpeachpages.net, which lists shelters and helplines in nearly every country.

If you are in immediate danger, leave if you can and call your local emergency number. If you cannot leave, find a safe room with a lock. If you cannot speak on the phone, many emergency lines accept silent calls and text — for example, in the UK you can call 999 then press 55 when prompted, and the operator will know to send help silently.

Sexual assault and abuse

RAINN (US), Rape Crisis (UK), Safe to Talk (NZ), the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (Ireland), and others are listed under their country headings. Internationally, see End Violence Against Women International at evawintl.org. If you are considering reporting recent sexual assault, contact a sexual-assault centre rather than the police first if possible — they will help you preserve evidence and walk you through your options.

Child endangerment

If a child is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number or your country's child-protection authority (CPS in the US, NSPCC line in the UK, Verzuim/Veilig Thuis in the Netherlands, Childline in Ireland, India, and many other countries, and the 116 111 EU line). Child Helpline International at childhelplineinternational.org maintains a global directory.

Human trafficking

The Polaris Project National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 (US) and the Modern Slavery Helpline at 08000 121 700 (UK) are listed above. Global Modern Slavery Directory at globalmodernslavery.org has hotlines for many other countries.

Substance use crisis

SAMHSA in the US, FRANK in the UK, AlAnon worldwide, and local lines listed by country. The International Drug Policy Consortium at idpc.net maintains resource pointers.

Veteran and active-duty service member crises

Veterans Crisis Line (US, 988 then press 1), Combat Stress (UK, 0800 138 1619), and Open Arms (Australia, 1800 011 046) are listed above.

Disaster-related psychological distress

The US SAMHSA Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 / text TalkWithUs to 66746 is for survivors of natural or human-caused disasters. National counterparts are listed by country.
