Getting started

What to expect from your first BookTarot reading

The pacing, the vibe, the kind of questions that work, and what to do after.

Before the session

Sit somewhere quiet. Camera on. Phone face down. Have a notebook handy.

Have a question, or have an open mind. Both work. If you have a question, make it open. 'What should I pay attention to in this relationship right now?' works better than 'will my ex come back?'. The first question gets a useful hour; the second gets a reader politely redirecting you.

The first few minutes

The reader will introduce themselves, ask about your question, and frame how they read. This is the part where you can ask anything · 'what deck do you use?', 'how should I think about reversed cards?', 'have you done a lot of readings like this?'. The reader's not on a clock during this part; they're settling you.

The reading itself

The reader shuffles. The shuffle takes longer than you'd expect · readers shuffle until something tells them to stop, which is usually 30 to 60 seconds. They lay out a spread, turn cards, and interpret.

A good reader doesn't speed-read the spread. They talk through one card, listen to your reaction, ask a clarifying question, and let the conversation steer the next card's interpretation. The reading is a dialogue, not a monologue.

What to do during

Be present. The reader will check in with you. Tell them when something lands and when it doesn't · honest reactions help them read better.

If you don't understand a card, ask. If a card seems to be saying something contradictory to what you brought, ask about that too. Tarot doesn't work as a one-way oracle; it works in conversation.

After the session

The reader will summarise. They might suggest a practice, a perspective, a thing to notice over the next week. Take notes.

Don't act on the reading immediately. The most useful thing a session does is hand you a sharper question, not a decided answer. Sit with what came up for a day or two. Notice what stays with you on the way to work the next morning. That's the part to listen to.

If you cry

You won't be the first. Readers are used to it. The session keeps going at your pace.

If the reading doesn't land

It happens. Tarot isn't for everyone every day, and not every reader is the right fit for every client. Tell us within 48 hours and we'll refund or credit you. The post-session feedback form has a checkbox for it.
