Session room: technical troubleshooting

Camera, mic, bandwidth, browser compatibility, common fixes.

Browser

The session room works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on the latest stable versions. It does not work in Internet Explorer (deprecated) or in older mobile browsers.

For best quality, use Chrome on desktop. Safari on iPhone and iPad is fully supported.

Camera and microphone permissions

The browser asks for camera and mic permission the first time you enter a session room. If you accidentally denied permission, you'll need to re-enable it in browser settings:

  • Chrome: click the camera icon in the address bar, choose 'Always allow' for booktarot.com
  • Safari (Mac): Safari menu > Settings for booktarot.com > camera/microphone Allow
  • Safari (iOS): Settings > Safari > Camera > Ask. Then refresh the room.
  • Firefox: click the camera icon in the address bar, choose Remember this decision, Allow

Bandwidth

The session room degrades gracefully on slow connections. At 1 Mbps you get smooth video. At 500 kbps, video is grainier but audio stays clean. Below 250 kbps, video drops to audio-only.

If video drops, audio usually keeps working. You can toggle your video off entirely from the room controls · most sessions still work fine as audio.

Tips for good audio

  • A wired headset beats AirPods for clarity.
  • Sit near your router or use ethernet.
  • Close other browser tabs that might be streaming (YouTube, Spotify).
  • Mute notifications · they get picked up by the mic.

Echo

Echo happens when your microphone picks up your speaker output. The fix is wearing headphones. The session room has echo cancellation built in but it's not perfect.

If everything fails

The in-room help button pages on-call support during business hours. As a fallback, the reader can phone you on a number you provide; we have an audio-only bridge for true emergencies.
